Didymos Twisted Lisca Emerald
The Basics
Didymos Twisted Lisca Emerald is woven from 100% pure organic cotton and at 230 GSM is In the medium weight category.
The Brand
Didymos have been making baby wraps since 1972 and are widely considered to be the 'grandmother' of the modern babywearing brands. They are a German company, experienced in selling & shipping worldwide, and their website is available in several languages (including English for those of us whose grasp on other languages extends, embarrassingly, to ordering a glass of wine & requesting the bill!). Didymos's experience and focus on the safety and well-being of children, with attention to social and ecological ethics, has resulted in a brand that babywearers around the world have come to trust for affordable quality.
When I first started looking into baby wraps, Didymos was one of the names that my babywearing friends immediately suggested I try. Sure enough, one of my very first wraps was a 'Didy', and my first Mei Tai a 'Didytai'. I was therefore really excited to be offered the opportunity to test and review their newest design.
Your Didymos wrap will arrive in an iconic Didymos blue & white box with helpful leaflets detailing basic carries, safe useage & care instructions.
The Looks
Didymos's Emerald colourway is a rich, jewel-tone combination of teal and blue. As you can see from the photos, it's radiant on even the dullest, foggiest English afternoon. Oh, and if like me you're lucky enough to have a little red-head in the family this colourway looks amazing on them!
Didymos's standard Lisca design is an all-time classic. The traditional herringbone pattern is easy to wear and versatile, and looks great with anything from muddy jeans to evening dresses (for those of you lucky enough to still get evenings out!). Their new Twisted Lisca is an exciting variation on this timeless pattern. It's such a delicate design and finer that I'd anticipated. Just like the standard Lisca, it goes with everything, is fully reversible and has no pattern placement issues. Twisted Lisca evokes images of feathers, fish tails & fine grass blowing in the wind. In the Emerald colourway particularly it reminds me of the edges of peacock feathers. The flowing, more natural-looking lines in the weave make 'Twisted' an even prettier, more feminine, Lisca.
You sometimes find that it's the simplest designs that look best wrapped, and this is definitely the case with Twisted Lisca.
The Wrapping Qualities
Twisted Lisca Emerald is very soft and floppy from the outset. In hand, it feels fairly light and quite thin, with no bulkiness whatsoever. It has excellent inherent diagonal stretch and is extremely mouldable, to the point that it virtually wraps itself! Its rails are visibly different, making it easy to avoid getting in a tangle! These qualities make it absolutely ideal for new wrappers and newborn or smaller babies.
It is however also supportive enough to carry older, heavier babies & toddlers. Twisted Lisca coped admirably with my 32 lb little boy in a Double Hammock Tied Under Bum (DH TUB) over the course of our usual 2-hour wanders. I was testing a size 7 (my non-pregnant base size when carrying my toddler) and I tried it out in a rucksack carry as well as the multi-layer base-size carries. I wouldn't say that it's a very 'cushy' wrap, and it was definitely more comfortable for me (and my tired, pregnant shoulders!) in those multi-layer carries. However, the fact that it's so easy to wrap with makes it possible to achieve a solid, precision wrap-job, which helps enormously when carrying a heavier toddler 'load'.
The twisted Lisca design generates a fine, ribbed texture, making it super grippy. When in place, my wrap job wasn't budging an inch, despite carrying my hefty toddler.
Being 100% cotton, Twisted Lisca Emerald is very easy care and can be washed in a machine. It's been dragged through the mud and put through the washing cycle a few times since arriving, and it dries quickly and steam irons easily.
Summary
Twisted Lisca Emerald is a joy to wrap with and an easy care workhorse in a beautiful, delicate, classic design. It's an ideal first wrap for a new wrapper with a newborn or young baby, but will also complement the stash of a more experienced wrapper who wants something that will wrap easily and stay put for those frequent toddler 'ups and downs'.
The Twisted Lisca design is definitely destined to become as much of a classic as the Didymos standard Lisca, and I look forward to seeing what colours and blends it's released in in the future.
