The Basics

Flight Amethyst from SUPU is 100% ethically sourced Egyptian Combed Cotton. It's 290 GSM making it a thicker wrap. I was testing a size 4 (base -3) with my toddler and five month old baby.

SUPU is the love child of Jess, a New Zealand mum living in the U.K. I had the pleasure of meeting Jess and her wraps at the Midlands Baby Carrying Convention earlier this year. Her enthusiasm and passion for her work positively bubbles out of every pore and it was virtually impossible to leave her stall without a smile & a wrap! Sadly, I managed the latter due to an ill-timed moment of self-control and have been yearning to try one ever since. Luckily a friend of mine snuck up and bought a Flight Amethyst when I wasn't looking, and has been kind enough to lend it to me to review.

The Looks

The Flight design is reminiscent of peacock feathers but quite unlike any other peacock feather design I've seen. It's classic and stylish, funky and retro all at the same time. For me, Flight conjures up the legends of Hera, of her beauty, immortality and pride, and then of her getting on a bus to Woodstock after giving Zeus a piece of her mind!

Flight Amethyst is woven using a very subtle muted dark grey-purple weft on an undyed ecru warp. My friend swears it's grey but I say purple! The truth is this beautiful, subtle colourway changes depending on the light, but is lovely and very wearable in all of its guises.

Amethyst doesn't have flipped hems. The official 'right' side is shown in these photographs, with the colours being reversed in the pattern on the other side. I actually really like the 'wrong' side too and you could definitely wear it either way. It has a very slight taper which is barely noticeable when wrapping. I tend to prefer a sharper taper as it adds a bit of length and makes knots easier.

The Wrapping Qualities

One of the reasons Flight Amethyst continued to niggle at my wrap-obsessed subconscious is the way that it feels in hand. Flight has a fine ribbed texture by virtue of the pattern in the weave and is quite unlike any other woven I've felt. It was also marshmallow soft even sitting unused on that SUPU stall and needs no breaking in.

Amethyst is floppy with a beautiful drape. The passes glide into place but that ribbed texture adds a good amount of grip. My toddler's had another growth spurt recently and weighs about as much as a baby hippo. Amethyst is lovely and cushy and was comfortable even when lugging him up loooooong steep hills. It's supportive, has a nice bit of bounce and is definitely toddler-approved.

So there has to be a down-side to this wrap right? Well, my husband misheard me when I said we were testing a SUPU and couldn't understand why anyone would name a wrap 'poo poo'. My toddler predictably thought this was hilarious and so our walk was accompanied by the marching song 'poo poo poo'. Yup, that's the only down-side I can think of!

Moving on from the high brow humour of toddlers, despite being on the heavier side, Amethyst doesn't feel thick or bulky in hand and is extremely mouldable with a good amount of stretch, so it's definitely squish worthy too. It's also breathable and felt comfortable in the range of weather experienced in England recently (tropical summer through to arctic winter!!).

Amethyst is easy care and will happily go in the washing machine and tumble drier (& comes out not even looking like it needs an iron).

Summary

In short, Amethyst is awesome. Hera would be proud! Soft and mouldable from the outset, floppy with a nice amount of cush, it glides into place yet grips beautifully when wrapped. It will serve you from squish to toddler and beyond, and do it with attitude!

Flight is available to buy from the SUPU website in a few different colourways. All are the same blend and weight, and should therefore have the same wrapping qualities. I say grab one before they go. Flight would be great as your first, last or 'one and only' wrap. You can follow SUPU on Facebook for news and details of new releases.
